The latest trailer for Marvel’s Wolverine on PlayStation 5 has become another battleground in the fight for physical media.
During its first three days on Sony’s YouTube channel, the Wolverine trailer received more than 933,000 views and 11,000 comments. Many had little to do with Wolverine, Lady Deathstrike, or the game itself. Instead, PlayStation fans flooded the comments with criticism of Sony’s decision to stop producing physical game discs beginning in January 2028.

The first line of the video’s description encourages gamers to “Unleash the rage, confront the past.” That appears to be exactly what many of them are doing—though probably not in the way Sony had hoped.
PlayStation Fans Turn Wolverine Into a Physical-Media Protest
Several of the most popular comments found ways to connect the trailer’s story with the physical-media controversy.
“Wolverine was really getting PHYSICAL in this trailer, he has such a DISCtinct presence,” one commenter wrote.
“Can’t wait for my DISC copy to come,” another added.
The trailer shows Wolverine desperately attempting to preserve a photograph from his past. Commenters quickly turned that detail into a metaphor for their campaign against Sony.

“Wow. Wolverine holding a physical photograph serves as a powerful reminder of why tangible media matters,” one commenter observed.
Another wrote, “Wolverine going mad over the loss of a physical photo is quite the choice for a trailer at the moment.”
Sony Moves Toward an All-Digital Future
The backlash follows Sony’s July 1 announcement that it will discontinue physical disc production for all new games released on PlayStation consoles beginning in 2028. Games released before that deadline will remain unaffected.
According to Sony, the decision responds to changing consumer preferences, with digital game sales now significantly outpacing physical purchases. With the long-anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI set to receive an exclusively digital release across all platforms, sales data may soon trend even more heavily in that direction—regardless of whether consumers were given a choice.

However, critics argue that eliminating discs will reduce consumer choice while giving Sony greater control over game prices, distribution, and long-term access. The decision also raises concerns about the future of other physical media, including music and movies. Physical products can be resold, lent to friends, collected, or purchased from competing retailers.
Those options largely disappear when purchases are tied to a single digital storefront.
Marvel’s Wolverine Will Still Receive a Physical Release
Marvel’s Wolverine is scheduled to launch for the PlayStation 5 on September 15, 2026. Since it arrives well before Sony’s deadline, the Insomniac Games title is already available to preorder as a physical edition. However, it could become one of the last major PlayStation exclusives available on disc.

Even so, some users on X have indicated that they will boycott Sony games entirely unless the company reverses course.
Sony’s Marketing Campaign Faces an Unwanted Distraction
Sony may be betting that the outrage will eventually fade as players continue shifting toward digital purchases. However, the reaction to the Wolverine trailer shows that the controversy is already disrupting the company’s marketing efforts.

A trailer intended to showcase one of PlayStation’s most anticipated games is instead dominated by customers warning Sony that they want to own what they purchase. Whether that anger ultimately affects sales remains uncertain, but PlayStation fans clearly have no intention of allowing the physical-media controversy to disappear quietly.
Wolverine’s final line in the trailer, while referring to his own identity, may be particularly appropriate for fans demanding the preservation of physical media: “When that’s gone, there won’t be anything left except rage.”
