As expected, Paramount is eager to move forward on Scream 8. However, the announcement that Lilla and Nora Zuckerman will be writing the script is raising eyebrows—and potentially concern among fans. Their latest project, Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale, was canceled after Hulu executives saw the pilot. The episode was reportedly “not perfect.” According to reactions to an allegedly leaked script, the writing was a major issue.

That makes the Scream franchise’s next move feel like a calculated risk.

Success Followed by a Gamble

This year’s Scream 7 defied box office projections and early negative reviews, debuting at $64.1 million. It’s the highest opening for the Scream franchise, unadjusted for inflation. At the time, Kevin Williamson, who co-wrote and directed the latest film, told Variety that, “If this film is successful and there’s an audience for it, you know we’ll make it.”

With the franchise riding renewed momentum, the next installment carries heightened expectations—not just commercially, but creatively. However, Williamson has decided to step away from the franchise and focus on other projects. “I have some ideas of where [Scream 8] could go, but I’m anxious to see what another storyteller could do with it,” he said in a March interview.

While not uncommon in Hollywood, the timing—following a major box office success—raises questions about the franchise’s creative direction. Against that backdrop, the choice of these new writers stands out.

Uncertainty Behind the Next Chapter

The Zuckerman sisters have a long history in television. They have worked as writers and co-executive producers on popular series including Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Suits, Fringe, and Prodigal Son. Most recently, they served as showrunners for the Rian Johnson-created Poker Face on Peacock.

Scream 8 marks their first entry into writing for a feature film—and their first project since the Buffy reboot was scrapped. Pages from the allegedly leaked script suggest to some that the character of Buffy Summers was diminished and featured a tonal shift that would not resonate with audiences. That information raises questions about the future of Scream 8.

From Sunnydale to Ghostface

The original Buffy series and the Scream franchise hit pop culture within a year of each other. While the Scream movies were able to feature a level of violence that Buffy couldn’t match on television, there were similarities. Both leaned into the ironic and subversive attitudes of the 90s, while balancing horror with humor.

The irony many are noting now is that the Zuckerman sisters moving from a canceled legacy reboot to a thematically similar major horror franchise.

A Franchise—and Career—on the Line

Whether or not Paramount ultimately moves forward with the Zuckerman sisters’ script remains to be seen. Scream 8 will be a proving ground for the writers—not only to show that they can handle the challenge of writing a feature film, but also that they can move past the shadow of the canceled Buffy reboot. In an industry where momentum can shift overnight, their hiring suggests that studios are often more interested in potential than past outcomes.

Horror fans breathing a sigh of relief after New Sunnydale was shelved will likely remain skeptical—and for now, Scream 8 looks less like a fresh start and more like another gamble on Hollywood’s habit of second chances.
