The marketing for Scream 7 said that Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) “must face the horrors of her past to put an end to the bloodshed once and for all.” However, Variety has reported that “insiders suggest plans are already in place” for Scream 8. More than that, a record-breaking opening weekend shows that horror fans want to see more of Ghostface.
Plans Already in Motion
Kevin Williamson, who co-wrote and directed the latest film, recently told Variety that he has “a lot of ideas” for Scream 8. He added, “If this film is successful and there’s an audience for it, you know we’ll make it because 1, I think the studio would like to make it, and 2, we the people who make these movies would love to make it because…they’re a blast to make and they’re so much fun.”

In an interview with Deadline, Williamson added that he’d been “spit-balling” ideas for Scream 8. “Neve [Campbell] had this great idea, and everyone seemed to run with it. So yeah, if this movie works and people want it, we’re here for the fans. So, if they want it, we’ll certainly give it to them.”
Campbell’s return as Sidney Prescott, the central character of the franchise’s first four installments, may have been the primary draw for Scream 7, making her return for future instalments likely. Courteney Cox is the only cast member to have appeared in all seven movies. Yet in interviews, the Gale Weathers actress has downplayed the possibility of her returning for a potential Scream 8. “I think everyone should want to do another Scream. It’s fun and it’s great,” she said. “I don’t think I can make the next one, but maybe we’ll see.”

While Scream 8 has yet to be officially greenlit, executive producer Marianne Maddalena told the trade outlet that filming could begin as early as Fall 2026. Yet ultimately, whether Scream 8 moves forward depends on more than creative interest.
The Franchise’s Biggest Opening Yet
Scream 7’s opening weekend box office performance makes Scream 8 even more likely. Paramount expected the film to open at $40 million, with outside analysts projecting it would exceed $50 million. Instead, Scream 7 debuted at $64.1 million, the highest opening for the Scream franchise, unadjusted for inflation.
This was despite early negative reviews. The film currently holds a 37% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes. Additionally, there was early speculation that fans were upset over the firing of Melissa Barrera, who had starred in the previous two films, for comments she had made regarding the Gaza conflict. Co-star Jenna Ortega and director Christopher Landon also left the project.

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law actress Tatiana Maslany took to Instagram to encourage fans to boycott the film in response to Barrera’s firing. However, political activism and celebrity efforts so far seem to have been ineffective. Fan loyalty to a beloved franchise may outweigh the influence of critics, online activism, and celebrity calls for boycotts.
A Controversy That Didn’t Derail the Series
Scream 7 demonstrates that the franchise can outlast the controversies that surround it, and the box office numbers make that clear. “Headlines fade and online backlash loses steam, but Ghostface remains. At this point, Scream 8 feels less like a possibility and more like the next logical step.
