Some Steven Universe fans are turning against voice actress Deedee Magno Hall after discovering that she follows several conservative personalities and political accounts on Instagram.

Hall provided the voice of Pearl throughout the original Cartoon Network series, Steven Universe and subsequent projects. Pearl is widely regarded as one of the most prominent depictions of same-sex attraction in children’s animation.

Fans have pointed to Pearl’s complex relationship with Rose Quartz and her broader emotional arc. The show itself, created by Rebecca Sugar, has been praised for its themes of acceptance, found family, emotional vulnerability, and LGBTQ+ representation.

However, the suggestion that the voice actress may not fully support the progressive movement is causing an uproar online.

Steven Universe Fans Question Hall’s Conservative Activity

The controversy erupted after animation-focused social media account ToonHive highlighted Hall’s Instagram activity.

In a post shared on X and Bluesky, ToonHive wrote, “Steven Universe fans are speculating that Deedee Magno Hall, the voice of Pearl, may support MAGA after noticing she follows Charlie Kirk and several MAGA-affiliated accounts on Instagram.”

Fans quickly connected those follows to broader assumptions about Hall’s political leanings. Posts reacting to the discovery highlighted what many saw as a stark contrast. How could a voice actor from Steven Universe harbor conservative sympathies?

The perceived contradiction prompted hundreds of replies, with some fans expressing disbelief, disappointment, or anger.

One X user wrote, “the deedee magno hall situation is so weird because wdym ur most famous for voicing the craziest lesbian in animation history but ur a charlie kirk fan.” Followed by a crying emoji, the user concluded, “genuinely bizarre what is going on in her brain.”

Another post featuring a crying emoji added, “Your most popular character that you acted for is not only a raging lesbian but was created by a queer person for basically ‘woke the show’ yet you’re maga.”

A conservative working as a voice actor on Steven Universe seems to be creating cognitive dissonance among the fans.

Deedee Magno Hall Has Not Said She’s Conservative

Hall has not issued a public statement addressing the speculation. Her Instagram profile describes her as an artist, “Jesus follower,” wife, and mother. She has also shared content related to her Christian faith, family life, and involvement with her church.

However, nothing uncovered by the online discussion shows Hall publicly endorsing a political candidate or movement. For now, the claims that the Steven Universe voice actress is a conservative are based purely on speculation.

Nevertheless, in a lengthy Bluesky thread, one user wrote, “I have to admit with how staunchly and openly religious she was and the kind of demeanour [sic] she gave, I am sadly not as shocked as I feel I should be.”

The user went on to suggest that Hall either felt more confident revealing her opinions because of the success of the MAGA movement or had been “seduced” to “this massive reactionary Christian nationalist movement” because of her faith.

Ultimately, many Steven Universe fans on both platforms expressed a sense of betrayal. A smaller number of voices defended Hall’s right to hold private political views or argued that simply following a conservative account does not necessarily indicate agreement.

Fans Conflate the Actor With the Character

The growing backlash illustrates how closely some fans connect actors to the fictional characters they portray. It also underscores how those most vocally calling for inclusion can struggle to extend that acceptance to someone judged solely by her social media follows.

For now, Hall appears to retain a strong fanbase based on her work throughout the Steven Universe franchise. However, the actress evidently does not feel obligated to seek anyone else’s permission before making her own choices.
