The Mandalorian & Grogu was announced by Lucasfilm in a blog post on the official Star Wars website about a month ago. The company detailed the movie will be “directed by Jon Favreau  and produced by Favreau, Kathleen Kennedy, and Dave Filoni, The Mandalorian & Grogu will go into production in 2024.”

Favreau shared, “I have loved telling stories set in the rich world that George Lucas created. The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting.”

Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy added, “Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have ushered into Star Wars two new and beloved characters, and this new story is a perfect fit for the big screen.”

The Film & Television Industry Alliance website also shares the film will being shooting on June 17, 2024 in Los Angeles, California. The site also provides a very broad synopsis of the film that reads, “The Mandalorian, a lone bounty hunter, is tasked with capturing Grogu, a mysterious and adorable creature. Instead, he forms a strong bond with Grogu and strives to protect him from various threats, exploring his evolving purpose in a post-Empire galaxy.”

There have been numerous rumors about the film since it was first announced. One early rumor suggested the movie would be part of a trilogy that would also include the previously announced Mandoverse film that Dave Filoni is supposed to direct.

That rumor came from Jason Ward at Making Star Wars. He detailed on his YouTube channel, “My source, the original source who first told me [that season four would be a movie], told me that this is going to be a trilogy.”

He continued, “And I’m going to add a caveat that’s just my additional sense on it, is that it’s a trilogy if the first one connects. If the first one is a big film, they’ll go forward and make two. If the first one is $350 million, if it’s Indiana Jones [and the Dial of Destiny] money, then they’re probably going to just do the two and then wash their hands with it.”

Ward then reiterated, “Those two films are going to happen.”

A separate rumor indicated that the film would adapt the end of the already written The Mandalorian Season 4.

Favreau confirmed Season 4 had been written in February of last year saying, “Season 4, yeah, I’ve written it already. We have to know where we are going to tell a fully formed story. So, we had mapped it out, Dave and I. And then slowly you write just each episode. So I was writing it during post-production because all of it has to feel like a continuation and one full story.”

Jeff Sneider during an appearance on The Hot Mic show claimed in December before the film was announced, “A couple of months ago, I also shot this one down, there were rumors that season 4 of The Mandalorian could be turned into a movie. At the time I don’t think that was necessarily the case. However, that is what I am starting to hear. That the odds are in that project’s favor. Whatever the season 4 of The Mandalorian turns out to be, whoever is in it, whatever shape it takes, it is looking like that could be the next Star Wars movie and that may be the thing that’s announced before the end of the year.”

He added, “I think that Star Wars is anxious to make an announcement. I don’t know that it will necessarily be before the end of the year especially because the town starts to shut down basically next week, but I think that those Mandalorian Season 4 movie rumors, I think there was something to those.”

Following this rumor, Jason Ward shared that Season 4 and the film would both be happening, “I’m still not 100% convinced they are going to do a season of Mando before that film. I’m not saying they’re not doing it, I just don’t actually know 100%. There’s a lot of signs that they are though.”

He elaborated, “And one of the concepts that has come out of this. And count this as a rumor for now is that the plan was to do six episodes of Mando and then to take the finale of what would have been the big two-parter from the end of that and that’s being developed into the film.”

“So, if that plan is what they are doing, if this rumor pans, we would get Mando Season 4 as six episodes and then we would get the film that is essentially that last two-parter that is such a good idea that it warrants going on screen and being a big screen endeavor. So that’s what the organization sounds like potentially,” he concluded.

A rumor from WDW Pro published here at That Park Place claims the end of season four will indeed be adapted into a film. Pro wrote, “According to our sources, all production on The Mandalorian Season Four is being moved from Manhattan Beach to the United Kingdom. This is to create a shared cinematic appearance for episodes 1-6. Then episodes 7-8 will also look the same, but they’re going to be a movie now.”

On top of this, Pro detailed that while Lucasfilm will use Jon Favreau’s scripts for episode 1-6, “Dave Filoni will ‘plus’ the ‘treatments’ so that they are no longer just a season finale, but rather they are the beginning of the great theatrical drama that is Clone Wars and Rebels characters taking on Thrawn.”

He also shared that there are plans for Luke Skywalker to “at least make a cameo appearance in the movie.”
