Kanye West has been one of the most divisive figures in pop culture. Writing for Variety, Jem Aswad claims that the troubled rapper’s latest attempt at public redemption is working. It’s framed as a familiar pattern: controversy erupts, outrage peaks, and eventually, attention drifts. Noting West’s January 2026 full-page apology for past behavior, Variety suggests that it was “all it took to wipe the slate clean.”

However, not everyone seems so confident in West’s rehabilitation and public redemption. Pepsi, Diageo, PayPal, and now Rockstar Energy have all withdrawn from London’s Wireless Festival 2026 since West was announced as the headliner.
The industry trade can claim that Kanye West’s career is, like it or not, back on track. Yet the hesitancy of corporations with financial considerations tells a different story.
A History of Disturbing Behavior
West’s long history of inflammatory comments is well documented. Some of the more mild statements include:
- 2013 – “Black people don’t have the same level of connections as Jewish people.”
- 2015 – H**ler was a “marketing genius” who “really understood how to mobilize people in a way that no one ever has.”
- 2022 – “I love Jewish people but I also love Na**s.”
- 2025 – “I don’t like or trust any Jewish person.”
Variety also points out what they specifically referred to as his “brief and, for many former fans, mortifying” support of Donald Trump. “How did he come back so quickly, after so many years of divisive behavior and three years of hate speech?” the article asks. The suggestion that, no matter how severe the fall, the spotlight eventually resets, feels compelling—it has happened many times before.

In his letter, addressed to “Those I’ve hurt,” West put the reset in motion. He attempted to explain the disturbing behavior and antisemitic rants and lay out his path going forward. There were no excuses, and he took full ownership of his earlier actions. Whether or not it came from a place of sincerity, or was just good PR, is open to debate. But the claim in Variety is that it was enough to “wipe the slate clean.”
Recent developments surrounding West complicate that argument.
Industry Response
Major sponsors are pulling out of London’s Wireless Festival 2026 following the announcement of Kanye West as its headliner. This suggests that, beneath the surface, consequences are still unfolding—just not always in the most visible or emotionally satisfying ways.

At the same time, Variety points to indicators of West’s resurgence: his album Bully debuting at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, a new deal with record label Gamma, and concerts promoted by Wave in partnership with Live Nation. Ironically, the article even cites the London festival itself as evidence of his renewed career momentum.
Overlapping Signals
Ultimately, despite what Variety suggests, Kanye West may still be seen by many corporations as a risky investment. Public attention, streaming numbers, and ticket sales can signal return, while corporate partnerships, sponsorships, and brand alignments can signal hesitation. Both can exist at the same time without canceling each other out.

The result is a more layered reality—one where “comeback” and “consequence” are not opposites, but overlapping signals, depending on which parts of the story are brought into focus.

Somewhere there’s a person going through the list of remaining sponsors to call and fully derail any attempt West might make in atonement We all know he really didn’t mean his apology, but *some* people know how to twist the screws. Not enough blood has been drained from West to call it even-steven. West needs to suffer more.
