Star Wars has long stood as one of the most successful franchises in film history. But after a string of recent projects that failed to fully connect with audiences, that dominance is starting to look less certain. If early box office tracking proves accurate, this summer’s The Mandalorian and Grogu could post the weakest opening weekend ever for a Star Wars film.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the movie—set to debut over the four-day Memorial Day weekend—is projected to earn roughly $80 million domestically. Even with the holiday boost and the theatrical debut of what was once one of Disney+’s most popular series, The Mandalorian and Grogu appears to be headed for a disappointing start.
A Continuing Decline
While an $80 million opening weekend may sound impressive, for many box office analysts it recalls Solo: A Star Wars Story. That film became the first entry in franchise history to lose money. Notably, it was not the last. The most recent theatrical release, The Rise of Skywalker, also faced scrutiny after carrying one of the largest production budgets ever.

Even before adjusting for inflation, The Mandalorian and Grogu is tracking for an opening weekend below Solo’s lackluster debut. Earlier long-range forecasts had projected a $90 million to $100 million domestic debut for the new film—already a modest figure by Star Wars standards. These latest estimates paint an even more troubling picture for what was once considered an untouchable blockbuster brand.
A Built-In Audience That Isn’t Turning Out
Despite assurances from director Jon Favreau that the transition from streaming to theaters would not require prior knowledge of The Mandalorian, early tracking suggests that neither longtime viewers nor general Star Wars fans are showing strong desire to see The Mandalorian and Grogu on opening weekend.
That lack of urgency is telling. Many viewers appear to expect that the new film will arrive on Disney+ sooner rather than later, reducing the incentive to see it in theaters. Yet even with what should be a built-in audience, the film’s projected domestic opening is still raising eyebrows across box office tracking circles.
Franchise Momentum in Question
Some fans of the Disney+ series felt that The Mandalorian experienced a noticeable decline in quality during its third—and, so far, final—season. That lost momentum makes it an unusual candidate for a theatrical push.

Aside from Grogu—who some critics argue functions more as a marketing draw than a fully developed character—and a promised appearance from Sigourney Weaver, the film’s star appeal rests heavily on Pedro Pascal. After last summer’s Fantastic Four: First Steps, which underperformed at the box office, questions have emerged about whether Pascal has the broad appeal needed to anchor major franchise films.
An Uncertain Theatrical Future
With The Mandalorian and Grogu still weeks from release, its final box office outcome remains fluid. Disney is expected to significantly ramp up marketing in the lead-up to Memorial Day, aiming to convert familiarity into opening weekend urgency. But with early tracking already underwhelming, the film arrives in theaters under unusual pressure for a Star Wars release—and with more questions than answers about the franchise’s future.
