Just one day after the opening weekend of Supergirl looked like a major disappointment, the final box office numbers have made the situation even worse for Warner Bros. Discovery and DC Studios.
Weekend estimates suggested James Gunn’s latest DC film would debut with roughly $68 million worldwide, including about $38 million domestically and $30 million internationally. Those figures were already alarming for a superhero blockbuster carrying a reported production budget of around $170 million.
The actual numbers, however, came in significantly lower.
According to Box Office Mojo, Supergirl actually opened to just $37.1 million domestically and $25.5 million internationally, for a worldwide opening of only $62.6 million.

Those revised figures represent another blow for Gunn’s rebooted DC Universe and further reinforce concerns that the franchise continues to struggle to attract moviegoers.
Supergirl’s International Performance Collapsed
While the domestic opening slipped by less than $1 million from initial estimates, the international box office saw a much steeper decline.
Instead of the roughly $30 million initially projected overseas, Supergirl ultimately finished with just $25.5 million from international markets. That reduced the film’s worldwide opening from an estimated $68 million to only $62.6 million.

For a film launching with the backing of one of Hollywood’s largest studios, those numbers are exceptionally weak.
The overseas performance may be particularly concerning for Warner Bros., as international markets have historically helped superhero films overcome softer domestic openings. That simply didn’t happen for Supergirl.
The Numbers Look Even Worse Against Other Box Office Disappointments
The revised totals make comparisons to recent Hollywood flops even more striking.
Marvel Studios’ The Marvels, widely regarded as one of the MCU’s biggest financial disappointments, opened to $46.1 million domestically and $110.3 million worldwide.
Disney’s live-action Snow White, another film that became synonymous with box office failure earlier this year, debuted with $42.2 million domestically and $87.3 million globally.

Sony’s Morbius, which became a meme for how poorly received it was, also opened higher, bringing in $39 million domestic and $44.9 million worldwide, for a global opening of $84 million.
Even those films—which were heavily criticized for their theatrical performances—opened comfortably ahead of Supergirl.
DC’s own The Flash, another major financial disappointment, launched with $55 million domestically and $139 million worldwide, more than doubling Supergirl‘s international opening.
Deadline Expects a $125 Million Loss
The grim opening weekend numbers are now being accompanied by equally troubling financial projections.
According to Deadline, Supergirl is expected to lose approximately $125 million for Warner Bros. Discovery and DC Studios once theatrical revenue, production costs, marketing expenses, and ancillary income are taken into account.

While studios often point to home entertainment sales, streaming value, licensing agreements, and tax incentives when evaluating profitability, a projected nine-figure loss would still represent a significant financial setback for one of Warner Bros.’ biggest releases of the year.
Questions About James Gunn’s DC Universe Will Continue
Supergirl is no longer an isolated disappointment.
Since James Gunn and Peter Safran took control of DC Studios, the new DC Universe has yet to produce the kind of breakout success many fans and investors expected. Superman fell short of the blockbuster performance many anticipated from one of the world’s most recognizable superheroes, while streaming projects such as Creature Commandos and Peacemaker have struggled to generate widespread mainstream enthusiasm.
Now, Supergirl has delivered one of the weakest openings for a modern DC superhero film.

Warner Bros. has publicly stood behind Gunn’s long-term vision, and there has been no indication that the studio is considering leadership changes. However, when a cornerstone theatrical release opens to just $62.6 million worldwide and industry trades are already projecting a $125 million loss, scrutiny over the direction of the DC brand is likely to intensify.
With several more DC projects already in development, Warner Bros. now faces increasing pressure to prove that its latest reboot can deliver the sustained commercial success that has so far remained elusive.
