Ariana Grande to Step Back From Public Spotlight Due to Ongoing “Public Scrutiny”

Ariana Grande says she’ll be stepping away from the public spotlight after completing her Eternal Sunshine Tour, with her representatives citing years of “ongoing public scrutiny” as the reason for the planned hiatus.

According to a statement provided to People, Grande plans to take “a step back from visibility” once her tour concludes on Sept. 1. At roughly the same time, reports surfaced that she has also withdrawn from the upcoming West End revival of Stephen Sondheim’s Sunday in the Park With George, where she had been expected to star alongside Jonathan Bailey.

“Ariana will be taking a step back from visibility after she completes the Eternal Sunshine Tour,” her representative told People. “She looks forward to finishing the tour and ending it on a high note, both healthily and happily, and then taking a much-deserved break from public-facing work and appearances, which has led to endless, ongoing public scrutiny.”

The announcement follows one of the busiest—and most controversial—stretches of Grande’s career, which has seen her transition from pop superstar to Oscar-nominated actress while also becoming the center of repeated public debates over her dramatic weight loss, political comments, and the often-bizarre public behavior that dominated much of the Wicked press tour.

A Career High Comes With Constant Attention

Few entertainers have been as successful over the past several years as Grande.

Her portrayal of Glinda in Wicked earned widespread critical acclaim and an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. The film became one of the biggest theatrical hits of 2024, while Wicked: For Good also proved to be a major commercial success.

At the same time, Grande released new music, embarked on the Eternal Sunshine Tour, and added another major studio comedy to her schedule with Universal’s upcoming Focker-in-Law, starring Robert De Niro and Ben Stiller.

Given that slate, it remains to be seen just how extensive her break from public appearances can be. The holiday release of Focker-in-Law would typically require a significant promotional campaign, although neither Universal nor Grande’s representatives have commented on whether she plans to participate.

The Scrutiny Was About More Than Fame

Grande’s representatives described her decision as a response to “ongoing public scrutiny,” but much of that attention has centered on issues that became major public conversations over the past two years.

Perhaps the biggest has been her dramatic physical transformation.

Fans have repeatedly expressed concern over Grande’s increasingly thin appearance, with renewed discussion erupting after the release of her latest music video, “Petal.” Social media has been flooded with debates over whether the singer appeared noticeably underweight, while others argued that speculation about her health crossed personal boundaries.

Regardless of where people fall on that debate, discussion surrounding Grande’s appearance has become an unavoidable part of coverage surrounding nearly every public appearance she’s made.

The Wicked Press Tour Became Its Own Story

Grande also became the center of countless online discussions during the global press tour for Wicked alongside co-star Cynthia Erivo.

Rather than focusing exclusively on the film, many interviews went viral because of the pair’s emotional exchanges, extended compliments toward one another, and physical interactions that many viewers described as unusual or overly theatrical.

Clips of Grande and Erivo holding hands during interviews, becoming emotional over relatively routine questions, and speaking in ways that spawned countless memes quickly spread across social media. What began as an enthusiastic promotional campaign eventually became a source of parody, with reaction videos and jokes often overshadowing discussion of the film itself.

Supporters viewed the two actresses as close friends celebrating an enormous career achievement. Critics, however, found many of the interviews awkward and performative, arguing that the press tour often drifted into bizarre territory.

Whether deserved or not, those moments became part of Grande’s public image throughout the Wicked promotional cycle.

Success Doesn’t Eliminate Public Criticism

Grande’s announcement highlights a reality that many major celebrities face: enormous success doesn’t necessarily insulate someone from public criticism.

In Grande’s case, that scrutiny has come from several directions at once. Her appearance has generated constant online discussion, her Wicked press tour became a cultural talking point for reasons beyond the movie itself, and every new public appearance has been dissected across social media.

At the same time, it’s also true that celebrities operating at Grande’s level naturally attract extraordinary public attention. Fans and critics alike have closely followed many of the choices she has made in recent years, and some of the conversation has stemmed from events that played out publicly rather than from pure speculation.

What’s Next?

For now, Grande is expected to complete the Eternal Sunshine Tour before stepping away from public-facing appearances.

She has also exited Sunday in the Park With George, though producers have since confirmed the production will continue as planned with a replacement expected to be announced at a later date.

Whether Grande’s hiatus lasts a few months or considerably longer remains to be seen. With another major studio film on the horizon, audiences likely won’t have to wait too long before seeing her back in the spotlight—even if she’s hoping to spend a little less time in it.
