Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios have another historic box office phenomenon on their hands.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day has officially debuted to an astonishing $927 million worldwide, making it the second-biggest global opening weekend in cinematic history, while also delivering the second-largest domestic opening ever with an estimated $355 million in North America. The only film to open bigger remains Avengers: Endgame, which launched to roughly $1.2 billion worldwide and $357 million domestically in 2019.
The massive debut comes nearly five years after Spider-Man: No Way Home became one of the defining theatrical events of the post-pandemic era. Rather than showing signs of slowing down, Tom Holland’s return as Peter Parker has elevated the franchise to even greater heights.
According to box office analyst Paul Dergarabedian of Rentrak, Brand New Day‘s worldwide launch places it behind only Avengers: Endgame among all opening weekends in history. Domestically, the film’s $355 million debut likewise trails only Endgame’s $357 million opening. Of course, it’s possible that these numbers could fluctuate up or down when actuals are reported later this week.

“It’s a perfect storm for a blockbuster,” Chris Colombo, founder of box office analytics firm Brighter Path, told CNN, pointing to the strength of the Spider-Man brand, positive audience reception, and the fear of missing out that accompanies major event films.
Spider-Man Continues to Rewrite the Record Books
The performance represents another enormous victory for Sony’s Spider-Man franchise.
Spider-Man: No Way Home previously opened to $260 million domestically in late 2021, becoming one of the biggest theatrical success stories of the modern era despite releasing during the pandemic recovery period.

Brand New Day has now comfortably surpassed that opening while becoming one of only a handful of films ever to approach the billion-dollar mark in a single weekend.
For Sony, it reinforces Spider-Man’s status as arguably the most bankable solo superhero in cinema.
No IMAX Advantage Makes the Opening Even More Remarkable
One of the more surprising aspects of Brand New Day’s historic opening is that it accomplished the feat without the benefit of a full IMAX rollout.
Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey retained control of premium IMAX screens following its own debut, limiting Spider-Man’s access to some of the highest-priced tickets available.

Premium large-format screens have become increasingly important to blockbuster box office performance, often generating a disproportionate share of opening weekend revenue.
Despite that limitation, audiences still turned out in overwhelming numbers, pushing Brand New Day to one of the biggest openings the industry has ever seen.
Summer Box Office Continues Its Remarkable Resurgence
The success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day also caps one of the strongest weekends the theatrical industry has ever experienced.
Universal’s The Odyssey added another $51 million domestically, pushing its worldwide total to approximately $721 million.
Disney’s Toy Story 5 finished third for the weekend, while Universal’s Minions & Monsters, Disney’s live-action Moana, and Hadestown: The Musical rounded out the top five.

Combined, the top-performing films helped produce what industry analysts estimate is the highest-grossing domestic weekend of all time, with approximately $430 million in ticket sales.
Dergarabedian believes the momentum could push the domestic summer box office past the $4 billion mark, while the overall 2026 domestic box office is now projected to challenge $10 billion.
Year-to-date, domestic ticket sales have reached roughly $6.19 billion, representing an increase of nearly 15% compared to the same point in 2025.
A Historic Start With Plenty of Room to Grow
Opening weekends generate headlines, but the real test for any blockbuster is staying power.
Early audience reactions have been overwhelmingly positive, suggesting Spider-Man: Brand New Day could enjoy a lengthy theatrical run if word of mouth remains strong.

Even if the film experiences the normal second-weekend decline typical of major blockbusters, it has already established itself as one of the defining box office events of 2026.
With nearly $1 billion already earned worldwide after just a single weekend, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has delivered exactly the kind of theatrical spectacle studios have been chasing—and reminded Hollywood that the biggest event movies can still bring audiences out in massive numbers.
