The 2026 Met Gala theme, “Fashion Is Art,” gave celebrities license to lean into the unconventional—and some used the opportunity to get weird. While many of the entertainment industry’s biggest names opted for more polished, traditional looks, others pushed boundaries in strikingly bizarre ways.

Users on X were quick to point out the contrast.

Rachel Zegler Draws Mixed Reactions on the Red Carpet

Rachel Zegler attended the Met Gala in a white corset dress paired with a blindfold—a comparatively restrained take on the evening’s more experimental looks.

Zegler was dressed as the portrait of The Execution of Lady Jane Grey, a depiction of a teenage queen who was unfairly persecuted and killed. Many critics on X accused Zegler of trying to paint herself as a victim with that choice, given her tumultuous history with the press and fans leading up to Disney’s disastrous Snow White remake.

Still, online users focused less on the outfit itself and more on her facial expressions, with commentary circulating around the actress behind the underperforming live-action Snow White adaptation.

While some attendees sparked conversation through restraint or controversy, others leaned fully into theatrical reinvention on the red carpet.

Intentional Transformation and Satire

Rapper Bad Bunny made one of his first public appearances following his controversial Super Bowl halftime show.

For the red carpet, he opted for an intentionally aged look, prompting comparisons to figures like Will Ferrell and sparking a wave of online commentary.

He joked that his look took 53 years to complete.

Living Sculpture and Digital Comparisons

Other celebrities took the 2026 Met Gala theme “Fashion Is Art” to an extreme.

Inspired by Raffaele Monti’s The Veiled Vestal sculpture, model Heidi Klum reportedly used pewter-toned fabric, foam, latex, and full-body makeup to evoke the appearance of carved marble. The result prompted some online users to question whether they were looking at an AI-generated animation of a statue brought to life.

Theatrical Fashion and Dark Imagery

Sam Smith—who was jokingly identified by some online accounts as Travis Kelce—appeared in a black gown with batwings and a feathered headpiece.

Madonna, whose elaborate outfit required attendants, embraced what observers described as “gothic, witch-like surrealism,” complete with a pirate ship headpiece.

Many noted that her look directly echoed elements from surrealist painter Leonora Carrington’s The Temptation of St. Anthony, positioning her as one of the celebrities most faithfully aligned with the evening’s art-inspired theme.

Not every attendee embraced maximalism or conceptual transformation, however—some opted for a more classic interpretation of the theme.

A Return to Classic Style

Not all celebrities at the 2026 Met Gala embraced the more unconventional interpretations of the theme.

Singer Sabrina Carpenter, following controversy surrounding her Coachella appearance, opted for a 1920s-inspired flapper look. That said, her black dress was made from literal film.

Distance Between Art and Audience

Ultimately, the celebrities at the 2026 Met Gala underscore the distance that can exist between Hollywood’s creative elite and the audiences they aim to entertain.

Whether intentionally or not—and regardless of whether it matters to those on the red carpet—the reception online suggested a widening gap between artistic intent and public interpretation. For every look met with admiration, there appeared to be many more met with confusion, humor, or disbelief, reflecting how easily high-concept fashion can shift from statement to spectacle once it reaches the screen.
