As Disney and ABC continue to find themselves in the political crosshairs of the Trump administration and the Federal Communications Commission, the company is making another headline-grabbing programming decision: bringing Rosie O’Donnell back to The View.
The former co-host confirmed this week that she will return as a guest for the daytime talk show’s milestone 30th season, saying she expects many of the program’s former hosts to reunite for the anniversary celebration.
Ordinarily, a reunion special would be little more than entertainment news. But the timing is difficult to ignore.
ABC’s flagship daytime program has spent months under intense scrutiny amid its ongoing battles with the Trump administration, and The View itself has become one of the network’s most politically controversial properties. Against that backdrop, welcoming back one of President Trump’s longest-running celebrity critics is certain to draw attention from both supporters and critics of the network.
Rosie O’Donnell Confirms Her Return
Speaking on The Tangle With Kyle Ridley podcast, O’Donnell said she would participate in Season 30’s celebration “in whatever way they want” but clarified she would only be returning as a guest.
“They’re bringing back all the hosts, I think,” O’Donnell said, adding that she remains proud of what The View has become and believes it now speaks “to the people and to politics.”

O’Donnell previously served as a co-host during Seasons 10 and 18, with both tenures ending amid highly publicized conflicts.
Her first run concluded after an infamous on-air confrontation with Elisabeth Hasselbeck in 2007, while her second stint included a frequently discussed difficult working relationship with moderator Whoopi Goldberg. During the recent podcast appearance, O’Donnell said she and Goldberg have since moved past those disagreements.
A Long History of Clashing With Donald Trump
O’Donnell’s return carries added significance because of her decades-long feud with President Donald Trump.
The conflict dates back to 2006 and has continued through multiple presidential campaigns and Trump’s return to the White House. O’Donnell has repeatedly criticized Trump publicly, while Trump has frequently responded with his own attacks over the years. Their public rivalry has become one of the longest-running celebrity-political feuds in modern American media.

More recently, O’Donnell has linked her future television ambitions to the eventual end of Trump’s presidency, saying she would like to launch another daytime talk show once he is no longer in office because she believes the country will be ready for what she described as a period of healing.
An Interesting Time for ABC
The announcement also arrives at a particularly delicate moment for Disney-owned ABC.
The company has spent months navigating increasingly tense relations with the Trump administration, while The View itself has faced heightened political scrutiny and regulatory attention from FCC Chairman Brendan Carr over issues involving the program’s political coverage and equal-time concerns.

Whether O’Donnell’s appearance is viewed simply as inviting back a former co-host for an anniversary celebration or as another example of ABC leaning into one of Trump’s most outspoken critics will likely depend on the audience.
ABC has not indicated that O’Donnell will have any role beyond the anniversary special, and O’Donnell herself stressed that she expects to appear only as a guest.
The Optics Will Be Hard to Ignore
On its face, bringing back former co-hosts for a 30th-anniversary celebration is hardly unusual. Anniversary television specials routinely reunite familiar faces.
Still, optics matter.
As Disney works through its ongoing political and regulatory challenges, one of its highest-profile television programs will once again feature a personality whose name has been intertwined with Donald Trump’s for nearly two decades.
Whether that proves to be little more than a nostalgic television reunion—or another flashpoint in the broader culture war surrounding Disney and ABC—will become clear when The View celebrates its landmark 30th season.
