Fans of Woody, Buzz, and Jessie will soon be able to revisit their favorite characters on tablets and television screens from the comfort of home.

Disney has announced that Toy Story 5 will arrive on Disney+ less than 100 days after its record-breaking theatrical debut.

The latest installment in Pixar’s flagship franchise will begin streaming exclusively on Disney+ on September 23. The date comes 96 days after the movie opened in theaters on June 19.

Toy Story 5 earned $160 million during its domestic opening weekend—the largest debut of 2026 and the second-biggest opening ever for an animated movie. However, after adjusting for inflation and rising ticket prices, it appears that fewer moviegoers actually saw the film than the first three installments.

That said, the movie has since surpassed $1 billion in unadjusted dollars at the worldwide box office, becoming the third Toy Story installment to reach that milestone.

Its financial success apparently did not convince Disney to extend the movie’s exclusive theatrical window beyond the company’s recent standard.

By comparison, Universal gave The Super Mario Galaxy Movie 120 days between its theatrical debut and arrival on Peacock.

The 96-day window is also slightly shorter than the one Disney gave The Mandalorian & Grogu, which will begin streaming on September 2. The Star Wars movie opened in theaters on May 22, giving it a 103-day theatrical-to-streaming window.

Toy Story 5 Receives Shorter Window Than Star Wars Flop

The difference is notable because Toy Story 5 dramatically outperformed The Mandalorian & Grogu at the box office.

While Pixar’s sequel crossed $1 billion worldwide, The Mandalorian & Grogu concluded its theatrical run with approximately $345 million. That made it the lowest-grossing live-action Star Wars movie despite reportedly costing $165 million before marketing expenses.

Disney acknowledged that the movie performed below its expectations. Nevertheless, The Mandalorian & Grogu received a slightly longer theatrical window than one of the year’s biggest box office successes.

The decision further demonstrates that a movie’s financial performance does not necessarily determine how quickly it reaches Disney+. However, it may also encourage families to wait for future Disney releases to arrive on the streaming service instead of purchasing theater tickets.

By September 23, Disney+ subscribers will have access to two of the studio’s tentpole summer releases within three weeks of each other.

Toy Story 5 Arrives After Disney+ Price Increases

Toy Story 5 will arrive on Disney+ the week after the streamer raises the price of its legacy Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN Select bundle. As Disney+ increasingly leans into less expensive content such as video podcasts and reality programs assembled from livestream footage, the addition of a major theatrical release may reassure subscribers of the platform’s value.

Directed by Andrew Stanton and co-directed by Kenna Harris, Toy Story 5 reunites Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Jessie, and the rest of Bonnie’s toys.

The sequel finds the familiar characters confronting Lilypad, a tablet voiced by Greta Lee that threatens to replace traditional toys in Bonnie’s life. Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, and Joan Cusack returned to voice Woody, Buzz, and Jessie, respectively.

The movie became the franchise’s first installment since Toy Story 4 arrived in 2019. It also extended a series that began with Pixar’s original Toy Story in 1995.

Toy Story 5 became available through premium digital retailers on August 18. Its 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD editions will be released on September 22—just one day before the movie begins streaming on Disney+. The physical editions also include a digital copy.
