The controversial Lanterns trailer has been removed from the official HBO Max and Warner Bros. accounts. As a result, articles that previously embedded the YouTube video now display a gray placeholder with a message indicating the video is private. Similar unavailable messages appear across links shared on Facebook and Instagram.

While the exact timing of the trailer’s removal has not been confirmed, it appears to have occurred on the same day a new animated promotional poster was released reminding viewers of the series’ August debut. Instead of showcasing footage from the show, the image features the Green Lantern ring, the release date, and the tagline, “Only one can wear the ring.”

The close timing of the trailer’s removal and the release of new promotional material has drawn attention, prompting discussion about the current state of the marketing rollout for the series.

Official Release and Early Reaction

After leaking online, HBO Max and Warner Bros. officially released the Lanterns trailer the following day. The preview quickly generated strong reactions online, with some viewers pointing to its grounded tone, frequent profanity, and subdued color palette as notable departures from typical superhero fare.

Much of the footage follows Green Lanterns Hal Jordan and John Stewart as they drive through desert landscapes and investigate what appears to be a murder in rural Nebraska. The tone and setting led many to draw comparisons to crime dramas such as True Detective, a stark contrast to the more cosmic scope traditionally associated with the comics.

At present, the trailer remains available through some—though not all—third-party channels that repost film trailers as well as within reaction videos. Notably, the Lanterns trailer has not been removed from the HBO Max Latinoamérica YouTube channel or from an X post shared by DC Studios head James Gunn.

DCU Tone and Audience Perception

From its start, James Gunn’s relaunch of the DC Universe has generated ongoing discussion online. A recurring point of criticism has been perceived inconsistency in tone. While last summer’s Superman featured brighter colors and a more comedic approach compared to Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, some viewers still felt its use of language made it less suitable for younger audiences. Its immediate follow-up, the HBO Max series Peacemaker, leaned further into mature content.

Early impressions of this summer’s Supergirl, which is set to hit theaters, have led some to speculate that the film may blend crass humor with a more emotionally burdened hero, alongside frequent pop music needle drops. Although the film is not directed by James Gunn, these elements are often associated with his broader creative influence, which has proven polarizing for some audiences.

Prior to the Lanterns trailer being removed from official accounts, early indicators suggested it may have followed a similar tonal direction to Peacemaker, continuing the franchise’s movement toward more grounded, adult-oriented storytelling.

Unanswered Questions and Next Steps

HBO Max and Warner Bros. have not commented on why the Lanterns trailer was removed. James Gunn, who is often active online in promoting his various projects, has likewise offered no clarification. The cause could be something as routine as a music licensing issue, or it could point to broader adjustments in presentation, such as changes to color grading, editing, or even specific story elements.

For now, fans will have to wait for the next wave of official marketing to get a clearer sense of the series’ direction. Until then, the situation remains a small but noticeable point of speculation within the wider rollout of the DC Universe.
