With a little over six months to go, Marvel is beginning to ramp up the marketing for Avengers: Doomsday. The first full trailer for the upcoming superhero epic arrived Monday morning, giving fans an idea of which heroes will return to face a threat that Thor says is more frightening than anything he has encountered before.

While Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom remains mostly hidden, the trailer still offers a strong impression of the character’s tone and presence.

Doctor Doom Warns of an “Unthinkable Decision”

Opening at Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters, the Avengers: Doomsday trailer begins with a voiceover from Doctor Doom.

“Something’s coming,” he intones. Downey’s voice is pitched lower than Tony Stark’s and features a heavy accent. “Something we may not be able to deter.”

As he speaks, Patrick Stewart’s Professor X shields his eyes from a bright light streaming through a window.

“Before this day is done. We shall be faced with an unthinkable decision,” Doctor Doom concludes.

Marvel fans will likely recognize that Doom is referring to the moral dilemma surrounding Incursions. In the comics, Incursions occur when alternate universes collide, destroying both unless one universe acts against the other first.

The Avengers Face Their Greatest Threat

The Avengers: Doomsday trailer then begins emphasizing the scale of the threat. Chris Hemsworth’s Thor explains that he has fought alongside many warriors in the past, all of whom died facing enemies and dangers less frightening than what is coming.

As he speaks, viewers receive their first look at Pedro Pascal—who was noticeably absent from earlier marketing—as Reed Richards, along with other Avengers who did not appear in the initial round of teasers. There are shots of Wakanda, several quick glimpses of the X-Men from the Fox universe, and Simu Liu as Shang-Chi. Viewers also see Florence Pugh’s Yelena fighting Mystique, with an expected twist.

The trailer effectively expands the world of the MCU while emphasizing the scope of the coming conflict. It also makes it undeniably clear that the film’s cast will be massive, cramming as many heroes as possible into the roughly two-and-a-half-minute spot.

Thor Needs a Miracle

Near the end of the Avengers: Doomsday trailer, Thor says, “But mark my words…” As he speaks, audiences see him facing Doctor Doom in what appears to be a losing battle.

“We’re going to need a miracle,” Thor concludes in voiceover.

The trailer then cuts to Thor encountering Chris Evans as Steve Rogers—notably, without his Captain America uniform. To confirm that he is who he claims to be, Rogers takes Mjolnir from Thor, having previously proved himself worthy of wielding the mythical hammer in Avengers: Endgame.

Marvel Fans Welcome the Return of a Serious Thor

Comments beneath the YouTube video express appreciation for Thor taking on a central leadership role and moving away from the overly humorous portrayal seen in his previous two films. Others highlight Downey’s Doctor Doom voice and the appropriate sense of menace it creates.

Whether that online enthusiasm translates into ticket sales remains to be seen. With Warner Bros.’ Dune 3 occupying IMAX screens during the same weekend, Disney is instead promoting the promise of the controversial Infinity Vision, which is mentioned at the end of the Avengers: Doomsday trailer.

Despite the competition and rumors that the film is not coming together “in the edit,” the trailer promises that Marvel Studios is still holding to its December 18 release date.
