Amazon reportedly plans to recast Atreus for the second season of its live-action God of War series, replacing first-season actor Callum Vinson with an older performer.

According to MP1st, a casting call has been issued for a teenage version of Atreus under the code name “Joshua.” Amazon is also seeking an older actress to replace Island Austin as Thor’s daughter, Thrud, who is referred to by the code name “Ruth.”

The changes appear to confirm that the second season will jump forward in time and adapt the events of God of War Ragnarök. Vinson and Austin will remain in the first season, which is expected to follow the story of the 2018 God of War game.

God of War Season 2 Will Introduce an Older Atreus

The new casting call describes Atreus as an empathetic, brave, and deeply curious teenager who wants to understand the truth about his identity. However, his trusting nature leaves him vulnerable to manipulation as he attempts to find his place in the world.

Actors auditioning for the role must also be comfortable performing physical combat and handling a bow. Those requirements closely align with Atreus’ characterization in Ragnarök, where he becomes more independent and increasingly willing to make decisions without his father.

The casting notice for Thrud similarly points toward the second game. It describes the character as intelligent, confident, sarcastic, and wise beyond her years. She also has a difficult relationship with her parents and believes that her grandfather, a king, may eventually select her as his heir.

Both descriptions contain obvious parallels to Ragnarök, where Atreus’ search for answers brings him into Odin’s orbit and introduces him to Thrud.

The younger Atreus will nevertheless play a major role in Season 1. Amazon’s official synopsis says the series will follow Kratos and his son as they journey to scatter the ashes of Faye, their wife and mother. Along the way, Kratos attempts to teach Atreus how to become a better god, while Atreus helps his father reconnect with his humanity.

Amazon’s God of War Has Faced a Troubled Production

The move to recast Atreus for God of War Season 2 appears to have been part of Amazon’s original plan. MP1st reports that casting calls for “Joshua” and “Ruth” went out alongside those for Season 1. However, the news comes as the series continues to face production setbacks.

Amazon greenlit the God of War series at the end of 2022. Two years later, Amazon and Sony replaced the entire creative team and brought on Ronald D. Moore as showrunner.

Little was heard about the project until last January, when Sons of Anarchy star Ryan Hurst was announced as Kratos. The actor had previously provided the voice and motion-capture performance for Thor in God of War Ragnarök. Fans were initially pleased by the news, although the first production stills drew mixed reactions.

Ryan Hurst’s Injury Also Forces Amazon to Recast Kratos

In July, Hurst suffered a torn bicep while performing a stunt and required surgery. A serious bicep tear can take several months to heal, while regaining full strength may take as long as a year. That recovery would significantly delay production, potentially causing Vinson to look noticeably older than he did in the four episodes already filmed.

Amazon ultimately decided to replace Hurst and reshoot the material he had completed. Dave Bautista is reportedly negotiating to assume the role.

Unlike Hurst’s departure, the Atreus and Thrud recasts do not appear to reflect behind-the-scenes problems. Instead, they reveal how Amazon intends to bridge the gap between the franchise’s two Norse games without waiting years for its younger actors to age naturally.

Amazon has not announced when God of War will premiere on Prime Video.
